Fall Classic(s): Autumn Road, Mountain and Cyclocross Rides in Summit County, Colorado

The sun sets over Lake Dillon in Summit County, Colorado.

The sun sets over Lake Dillon in Summit County, Colorado.

A poignant simile can make a new snowfall sparkle more brightly in the sunshine. If you live in Colorado and spend too long grasping for those words in fall, you’ll miss out on the brilliant show of color right outside your door.

Several times in the last few weeks, I’ve been on my bike both at the moment the sun rises from behind the Continental Divide and when it sinks into the Vail Valley. No, I’m not fortunate enough to have time for bike expeditions in the middle of the workweek.

Shorter days are a symptom of summer becoming winter and it means I’m dazzled by the fall color show each time I commute. Yes, dazzled. Just my ride home involves pedaling under a canopy of yellow aspens and cottonwoods. It’s stunning at sunset. Check it out for yourself on one of these rides. And don’t forget the camera.

Rowing at Altitude: Frisco Rowing Center in Summit County, Colorado

lake dillon rowing

Though the purple, chemical-filled skies of east coast cities can be beautiful at sunrise, Lake Dillon offers a pristine setting for members of the Frisco Rowing Center in Summit County, Colorado.

I haven’t been this excited in a long time. Well, let’s qualify that. I haven’t been this excited about a sport in a long time. Sport in question? Rowing.

As a fat-kid-turned-individual-sports-enthusiast, I entered the world of team sports my sophomore year in college. Assuming later that I was targeted for my large stature, I remember getting sidelined on my way to class by someone standing next to a boat. All I really recall after that is some 60 girls, including myself, showing up for the first day of crew “tryouts;” when those two weeks were over, there were nine of us still willing to return for regular practices. And so our novice eight, complete with alternate, was born.

Despite the four-something a.m. — and sometimes snowy — bicycle rides to the boathouse; seeing, during practice, the occasional prostitute wrapping up her last job of the evening; and missing out on the schedule of fun set in my freshman year of school; something about being on the water at sunrise made Philly just perfect. I said if I ever found myself old and rich and living on the east coast, I’d get back into rowing. Thankfully, I didn’t have to wait for something that will never be. At least not the rich part or the east coast part.

Summit County, Colorado's frequently-used trails require more than respect. Give back with a volunteer day.

Summit County, Colorado's frequently-used trails require more than respect. Give back with a volunteer day.

Like many residents of Summit County, Colorado, I spend much of my summer exploring the expansive trail network our home has to offer. With the local trails seeing so much use, it’s important to go beyond respect and give back with a little (or a lot of) manual labor.

Several trails organizations in Summit County have released their 2011 projects and below is a rundown, not including ongoing stewardship programs. Contact the individual organizations for project details.

Skate Skiing in Summit County: Lessons at the Frisco Nordic Center

The trails at the Frisco Nordic Center offer views of the Tenmile Range, Gore Range and Lake Dillon.

The trails at the Frisco Nordic Center offer views of the Tenmile Range, Gore Range and Lake Dillon.

It seems many of the aerobic freaks who win randonee events also Nordic ski. Also, many cyclists use it for cross-training in the winter. It’s not my goal to become an aerobic freak or race bikes, but staying fit while playing outdoors (rather than in a gym) is pretty appealing. And so I discovered skate skiing at the Frisco Nordic Center in Summit County, Colorado.

I admit, it was much harder than I anticipated. When it came time to add poles to the equation, I really flailed. But like those on vacation who feel obligated to get in a full seven hours when purchasing day lift tickets, I was determined to get my money’s worth of skate ski lesson, rental and trail pass. Top Events August 30 – September 6 in Summit County, Colorado: Breckenridge, Copper, Dillon, Frisco and Keystone

The annual rubber duck races in Breckenridge are one of many events happening over the Labor Day weekend in Summit County, Colorado.

The annual rubber duck races in Breckenridge are one of many events happening over the Labor Day weekend in Summit County, Colorado.

Just as Memorial Day is often considered the unofficial start to summer, Labor Day can be considered the unofficial close. The aspen in my neighborhood are already beginning to turn yellow, despite Denver temperatures climbing into the 90s.

While many of Summit County’s towns offer events into the fall, the non-stop, free event summer circus is nearing its end. So this will be the last of the weekly event posts until next summer. That said, I can’t stay away from Oktoberfest and the other Summit County events that continue through the fall. So you may get some photos from those. Besides, the approach of fall is an excellent time for backpacking and biking. So I’ll likely be posting those exploits as well. Until next summer, here’s your top events for August 30 – September 6 in Summit County, Colorado: Breckenridge, Copper, Dillon, Frisco and Keystone. [Read more →]

The Swan Mountain Road bike path is part of an excellent loop for road biking in Summit County, Colorado.

Route: Swan Mountain Road loop, clockwise around Lake Dillon
Start/End: Dillon, Colorado
Season: Spring-Fall

Since I started mountain biking in Colorado (last season), I’ve definitely been splitting the time I formerly spent solely on my road bike. I like it all, and I love commuting and touring. But with a recent back injury, I found myself rediscovering some of my favorite road bike rides in Colorado, including the Swan Mountain Road loop. Recent completion of the bike path up the east side of Swan Mountain Road has also made it much more pleasant.

Swan Mountain Road

A two-lane road, Swan Mountain Road runs between U.S. Highway 6 (near Keystone and Dillon) and Colorado State Highway 9 (near Breckenridge and Frisco). Swan Mountain Road is a much shorter route than I-70 for those traveling between Breckenridge and Keystone or Summit Cove. It can also be a preferred route to/from Dillon. [Read more →]

Ok, so working Dillon’s BBQ Challenge and having family in town at the same time wasted me. So your events this week are a bit late. Still, there’s plenty happening this weekend throughout Summit County. Think live music, and plenty of it. [Read more →]

BBQ at the Summit hits Dillon, Colorado on August 6th and 7th.

As an employee of the Town of Dillon’s event department, I’ll be speaking barbeque for the entire week. I’ll just be thankful that speaking doesn’t equal the same calories as eating.

There’s plenty happening this week in the county in addition to BBQ at the Summit. Here goes: [Read more →]
